The concept of working in phases is not unique to visual investigations, but in this field, it is a requirement for accuracy. You do not write a book by perfecting the second chapter first; you draft the outline. Similarly, you cannot extract visual evidence instantly.
Visual evidence is latent. The information contained in an image or video is present but not immediately obvious. Extracting it is a gradual perceptual process. Your brain extracts spatial relationships, notices contradictions, and catches details only after extended exposure and manipulation of the material.
Because your understanding evolves, your model must evolve with it. If you attempt to build a photo-realistic scene on day one, you are prioritizing aesthetics over accuracy and setting yourself up for failure. We need a workflow that accommodates two inevitable realities:
- New Evidence: New footage surfaces or measurements arrive.
- New Understanding: You realize a detail you previously misjudged.
This requires a phased workflow. In game design, you move through phases to invent; in investigation, you move through phases to verify. Every step is probative.

The stable baseline. Relies on objective data like satellite imagery or LIDAR, not interpretation.

The Foundation: Establishing "Ground Truth"โ
Before any modeling begins, you must establish what Forensic Architecture calls a Ground Truth.
This is your stable baseline. It is the geometric anchor that you can defend with the highest degree of certainty. It relies on objective data rather than interpretation.
- The Input: Satellite imagery, surveyor plans, LIDAR data, or verified GPS points.
- The Output: Simple, low-poly shapes placed in mathematically correct locations with verified dimensions.
- The Function: This is the canvas upon which all subsequent, more volatile evidence (like shaky user-generated video) will be placed. If your Ground Truth is wrong, every subsequent deduction is wrong.
Phase 1: The Block-outโ
This is where you will spend 80% of your time. You are using the Ground Truth foundation to test hypotheses. Use primitive blockout shapes to place key objects of interest.
- The Goal: Spatial accuracy and correct placement of key objects of interest.
- The Mindset: Ignore topology. If the scale or positioning is wrong, having a detailed model is pointless.
- The "Commit": You generally do not leave this phase until the spatial relationships of objects in your scene are verified against your Ground Truth data.
Phase 2: Refinement & Topologyโ
This phase is defined by the moment you have to "commit" your geometry. While non-destructive workflows are generally best practice, reality often demands commiting to a descrutive action. This commitment marks the border between Block-out and Refinement.
- The Goal: Recognizability. The viewer needs to distinguish between a sedan and a van, or a brick wall and a wire fence.
- The Mindset: Add only enough geometry to make the object readable to a stakeholder (a judge, an editor, a peer).
- The Risk: Once you commit geometry, making changes becomes harder. Ensure your Phase 1 is solid before moving here.
Phase 3: Detailing (Probative Value Only)โ
In investigation, we only add details that have probative value.
- The Goal: Specificity.
- The Rule: If a detail does not help answer a specific question or serve the purpose of a more accurate match, there is no reason to model it.
- Example: We do not model every crack in the pavement. We do model the specific crater caused by a munition, or the specific dent in a car bumper that corroborates a collision timestamp.
Phase 4+: The Polishโ
In a standard entertainment pipeline, one would continue from this phase into sculpting, UV Unwrapping, Texturing, Shading, and Post-Processing. In an investigation, clarity is king. Geometric accuracy matters infinitely more than photorealistic renders.
As ever, there are exceptions: Functional Texturing There are cases where you must proceed to texturing, but the goal remains strictly functional, not aesthetic.
Example: You may need to UV unwrap a car model to project a specific texture (like a unique identifying pattern) or sculpt damage that aligns with evidence.
The Guidline: If it does not serve a verified investigative function, do not add it.
So unless your model explicitly demands this level of functional detail, stop at Phase 3.
Versioning as Chain of Custodyโ
Saving your work incrementally (Simple example: Scene_01_Blockout.blend, Scene_02_Refined.blend) is not just file management; it is a key component of your Chain of Custody.
In a visual investigation, you must be able to show how you arrived at your conclusion. Your version history serves as an audit trail for your logic.
- Auditability: If a stakeholder challenges a specific wall placement in your final render, you can open your Phase 1 Block-out file and demonstrate exactly which satellite image or photogrammetry match established that position. You can prove your work was derived from evidence, not imagination.
- Resilience & The Loop: When new evidence arrives (and it might), it may disprove your refined model. A robust version history allows you to "roll back" to a specific phase, adjust on the new data, and re-process the investigation without having to start from scratch.
