Collaborate
Introduction
Shared Boards
One set of reference images the whole team can annotate.
Linked Scenes
Link a model instead of copying it. One source of truth.
Clean Handover
Send a working copy in the right format. Keep the original in the vault.
More than one person works on a reconstruction. Someone supplies the footage, someone builds the model, someone checks a measurement.
Collaboration is cross-cutting in the Research Gate, so the useful content is the toolchain: reference boards, scene structure, file handover, and remote viewing.
Reference boards
A board holds the images the team works from: stills, maps, satellite tiles, earlier reconstructions. Everyone sees one set, and anyone can annotate it.
| Tool | Runs | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PureRef | Desktop, offline | Free. One floating window. Works for a solo investigator |
| Milanote | Cloud | Comment threads and share links. Paid beyond the free tier |
Keep one board per project. An annotated board is a working document, so record what it shows.
Scene structure
Blender reads a scene as a tree of data blocks. A second person can follow that tree.
- Link a shared model instead of copying it, so one asset feeds every scene. See Scene Management.
- Name each object for the thing it represents.
- Order collections the way a reader would look: site, objects, reference.
- Keep the model apart from the scene that presents it.
Preserve & Store makes the same point about files. One asset, one home.
File handover
Send the format that fits the job.
- Send
.blendto a Blender user. SendglTForFBXto anyone else. - Send a working copy. The original stays in the vault.
- Reuse the naming convention from Preserve & Store, so a filename survives the trip.
- Log the handover: who, when, and the hash before and after.
File Formats covers what each format keeps and what it drops.
Remote viewing
Some collaborators need to walk the scene themselves.
- VR Scene Inspection puts a reader inside the model.
- Blender MCP lets an agent drive a scene you share.
Summary
Set the tools up before the work needs them. A shared board and a linked scene take minutes, and they save a rebuild later.
