Introduction​

Before you dive headfirst into learning Blender, there are a few key points I want to mention. It is my hope that these pointers will help you avoid the hurdles I encountered while learning Blender. Since this knowledge base encourages you to conduct your own research, keeping these points in mind while watching videos or reading articles will help you filter information effectively.

Learning 3D is a marathon, not a sprint. Embrace the process and expect to make mistakes along the way.

Context Matters

The answer to most "how should I do this?" questions is: it depends. Context determines approach.

Focus on 25%

For visual investigation, you'll use only a fraction of Blender's capabilities. Don't let the rest intimidate you.


The Pitfalls​

Feeling Intimidated​

Blender is highly versatile and packed with features. This can be intimidating when you first open the program; it often looks like the cockpit of a 747. However, remember that for most of our use cases, we will only use a fraction of its capabilities.

As a beginner, your goal should be to learn how to navigate and create verifiable outcomes based on external data. We generally won't be concentrating on high-end aesthetics. People have built entire careers around just lighting or just texturing, and it is unfair to demand that you learn those aspects to that level. Most options, terms, and windows will be unnecessary for our purposes. If a button doesn't help you measure or model, you can usually ignore it.

Conflicting Information​

When watching (random) Blender tutorials, you will often encounter people insisting on strict rules like "Never use X" or "Always use X." Be cautious of these kinds of advice.

"Rules" usually apply to a specific context, such as Game Design or Feature Animation. In Visual Investigation for example, the accuracy of what you are making matters more than if the underlying "skeleton" of the model is "perfect". If a model gives you the correct shape and measurement, use it. The point is that rigid approaches can hinder your learning progress; I've personally spent weeks untangling misconceptions caused by similar statements. So always consider the source and the context of the tutorial you are watching and take dos and don'ts with a grain of salt.

The "It Depends" Reality​

Within Blender, just like in real life, there are often multiple ways to achieve a result. A big challenge is determining beforehand what you're trying to argue for, establishing a strategy to get there, and considering how it fits into the larger context of the investigation.

Even within our specific field, the workflow changes drastically based on the goal.

  • If you are building a VR environment to place a witness in so they can recall an event, your priority is optimization and frame rate. You might sacrifice small details to ensure the scene runs smoothly in the headset.
  • If you are reconstructing a landmine from photogrammetry data for technical analysis and 3D printing, your priority is millimeter-precision and surface accuracy. Optimization is less irrelevant here.

There is no single "correct" workflow, only choices and trade-offs. That's why this course includes an in-depth introduction to 3D concepts. So you can make informed decisions about which path to take.

The "Hammer Syndrome" (Using Blender for Everything)​

Because Blender can do everything, you might be tempted to use it for everything. But just because you have a hammer, not everything is a nail.

You might encounter debates about whether Blender is better than other software, but these discussions are often pointless. Blender is just one cog in a broader ecosystem.

  • Trying to process 10,000 drone photos? Use Reality Capture.
  • Trying to analyze complex geospatial data? Use QGIS.
  • Trying to edit a full documentary? Use DaVinci Resolve.

Do not expect it to be a tool it isn't.

Managing Complexity (The 25% guideline)​

Blender is massive. It allows users to sculpt characters, paint textures, and edit feature films. This vastness is the #1 reason beginners quit: they try to learn everything at once.

It is important to realize that for a baseline visual investigation, you will likely use only 25% of Blender's capabilities. If you focus on mastering this 25% (Modeling, Measurement, Camera Matching, Rendering), you have a very strong baseline with which you can work on most cases thrown at you. You do not need to learn character rigging or hair simulation to reconstruct a crime scene.

Learning 3D: A Marathon, Not a Sprint​

This one might be obvious, but since there are many "I learned Blender in 7 days" videos out there, I want to stress that learning a new skill takes time. There is no magic pill. Mistakes are inevitable, and frustration is part of the process.

The key is to keep practicing. When learning the repetition of the process is often more valuable than the final result.


Technical Considerations​

Versions (Blender 5.0)​

As of November 2025, Blender 5.0 is the most recent and capable Blender release. This Knowledge Base is built on that 5.0 foundation.

Because Blender 5.0 introduced significant updates, older tutorials (from the 3.x or 4.x era) might show buttons in different places, use outdated names, or use nodes that don't excist anymore. If something in an older video doesn't match your screen, do not panic. In most cases the concept remains the same and available, even if the icon has moved or the name has changed.

Shortcuts​

Blender relies heavily on keyboard shortcuts. This is both a blessing and a curse.

The Curse: In the beginning, it can be confusing trying to figure out what is where. Practically everything has a shortcut, and even experienced users discover hidden ones after years of use. The Blessing: After a while, you will develop muscle memory that makes your workflow significantly faster. Actions that would require multiple menu clicks become instantaneous.

Strategy: Don't try to memorize everything at once. Learn shortcuts as you need them. When you find yourself repeating an action frequently, that's the time to learn its shortcut.
