Inset Faces
Introduction​
The Inset tool creates a new, smaller face inside a selected face, connected by a ring of new geometry. It is the first step in creating windows, panels, or support loops for subdivision surfaces.

Basic Usage​
- Select: Select one or more faces.
- Activate: Press
I. - Adjust: Move the mouse to determine the thickness of the inset border.
- Confirm: Left-click to confirm.
Advanced Controls​
While the Inset tool is active (before confirming):
- Individual (
I): Toggles between insetting the entire selection as one group (default) or insetting each face individually. - Boundary (
B): If you are insetting a face that is on the edge of an open mesh (no neighbor), this toggle determines if the open edge is insets or left alone. - Depth (
Ctrl): Holding Ctrl while moving the mouse allows you to push the inset face in or out (combining Inset + Extrude).
Common Use Cases​
- Support Loops: Insetting a face creates a "safety ring" of geometry that prevents textures from stretching and keeps edges sharp when using Subdivision Surface.
- Windows: Inset a face on a wall, then Extrude (
E) it inwards to create a window recess.
