Bilthoven — 3D model of the suspended case (Opsporing Verzocht)

Background​

In September 2009, a 15-year-old girl was dragged into the woods between Bilthoven and Bos and Duin, a plastic bag pulled over her head, and raped. The perpetrator was never found. In late 2020/early 2021 the Dutch cold-case team (Middenland), together with biometry and visualization teams, built both a composite sketch and a 3D model of the suspect from the 2009 police reports and the memory the victim repeatedly re-shared.

The goal: release the 3D model publicly so the public can recognise a man who, ~11 years on, is estimated to be 45–60. DNA is available, so any tip can be verified.

How it was likely made​

  1. Composite drawing (2D): a police composite artist worked iteratively with the victim — eyebrows, hairline, fuller build, face shape. The result is a 2D representation with no depth or dimension.
  2. 3D model the face: a 3D artist converted the flat composite into a lifelike 3D face, focusing first on the face form, then using the clothing + hair descriptions to model hair length, curls, and fullness.
  3. Iterative witness feedback: multiple sessions with the victim; her adjustments (face shape, hair, build, posture) were baked back into the model, refining toward a "lifelike" representation of the whole person — build, height, posture — since people are recognised beyond the face alone.
  4. Release to the public + DNA-backed verification to convert recognition into confirmed identification.

Why it matters for visual investigation​

This is person reconstruction from memory, a different technique class than the munition/object/urban cases in this collection. It pairs witness-perceptual memory with 3D modeling to unlock a prosecution-worthy presentation — analogous to in-world scenario but for the person, not the scene.

Open questions / next steps​

  • Fill out after source comparison: this is a sketch; exact tools (Blender sculpting? model bases? portrait apps?) not yet verified.
