UMPB D-30SN Precision Modeling

Background

The UMPB D-30SN is a Russian precision-guided glide bomb that emerged in early 2024 — often described as the Russian equivalent of the US GBU-39 SDB. Structurally a hybrid between bomb and cruise missile, depending on whether it carries a turbojet or solid-fuel booster.

This example focuses on hard-surface precision modeling and functional reverse-engineering: matching technical specifications and (limited) blueprints to create a dimensionally accurate asset — the foundation of the beginner course built for Jehanzeb (#33).

Technical specs for modeling

  • Caliber/diameter: 300 mm (from "D-30" designation).
  • Warhead: FAB-250 equivalent (~113 kg explosive).
  • Key features: cruciform tail (4 control surfaces), folding wing module on top (likely source of "UMPB"), Kometa-M8 CRPA jam-resistant antenna, foreign microelectronics (STMicroelectronics, Murata, etc.).

Technical workflow

  1. Blueprint alignment: hi-res blueprints not public → source reference photos + patent drawings (KTRV), use known 300 mm diameter for scale, refine from open-source imagery.
  2. Modular component geometry: nose cone, universal carrier module (folding wings), folding wing assembly (animatable drop sequence), swappable propulsion tails (jet vs booster).
  3. No texture focus: simple materials, color-coded components (red = warhead, gray = body, blue = guidance).
