Nuseirat Raid — Urban Reconstruction & Camera Matching

Background

A large-scale urban spatial reconstruction of the Nuseirat hostage rescue raid (Gaza). The investigation maps a complex 4-hour timeline across a ~1-mile radius, synthesizing civilian ground video, IDF helmet cams, and satellite imagery to track vehicles, map airstrikes, and verify damage and casualties.

Note: distinct from the village-scale Gaza work with Yakov Garb (#25) — this is a military-raid urban reconstruction.

How it was likely made

  • Hybrid LOD modeling: rough 3D terrain/basemap for the larger 1-mile contextual area, blended with localized detailed low-poly blockouts (tents, cars, specific buildings) for critical event nodes.
  • Asset sourcing & kitbashing: mixing open-source 3D assets (generic vehicles, tents) with custom-modeled buildings (e.g., the Miqdad family home).
  • Multimodal camera matching: fSpy / Perspective Plotter to align low-quality kinetic phone footage against architectural baselines.
  • Spatial tracking & timeline mapping: tracing extraction vehicle paths and verified airstrike locations over the 4-hour period.

Models

  • Macro area: OSM base map of buildings, satellite imagery backdrop, camera-matched reconstruction.
  • Micro area: custom-modeled tents, cars, and specific buildings based on open-source footage and satellite baselines.
  • Stock footage of smoke plumes (VDB) + custom modeling.
